Mike Curtis has called Ken Elig his “mentor.” After Selig hired Curtis for the revived Harvey Comics:
He taught me how to write a comic book from an idea to a finished storyline (remember this was very pre-internet) and credits there gave me the chance to do scripts for three unproduced CASPER TV pilots, and then later on to do my own comic book SHANDA THE PANDA.
If you don’t like the way Mike writes, Mr. Selig probably deserve some of the blame.
By the way, that would be Haf-and-Haf’s estranged wife The Great Zelda. He left her and later tried to kill her.
I’m thinking high diver lady’s placement is not consequential as he says his line while having the paper open to a possibly revealing page, a page which may be a continuation of her page 1 story. I Wonder if he is angry because Lum’s “Believe it er Don’t” isn’t mentioned and is prolly a bit older than this “pop star favorite” of a single panel daily.
He is free to roam. I wonder if it is the same night as his escape? Or maybe it is the end of the night and the false dawn is a glimmer. He is like a wandering hero only he isn’t a hero at all. He is a monster with some kind of need to right wrongs as he has had them. Of course to him he is doing right, except for that one voice that refuses to. An inversion of the hero’s journey. I love it!
The three of him are having a jolly good revenge-high about the high-diver (ex-wife The Great Zelda) after the bus ride from Wertham Woods to Selig Street (outskirts of Tracyville, I’d guess)….

For what it’s worth, “selig” is German for “blessed.” Not to be confused with Woody Allen’s “Zelig.” (Or is it?)
Night-Gaunt49[Bozo is Boffo] almost 6 years ago
Zelig:a person who is able to change their appearance, behavior, or attitudes, so as to be comfortable in any situation. (A human chameleon.)
Helig is “holy”. Do you live in a helig stat? “Holy State”

If I understand today’s strip, the protagonist is riding a bus, gets off in the middle of nowhere, but that spot has a newsstand.
