I got the Cav patch and the 16, and TWO dog tags, by choice NOT an “O” serial number. The inscription reminds me of seeing Vietnamese men holding hands, cultural differences.
^ Quite a shock to see two soldiers holding hands the first time. By the time I left Korea, I thought nothing of a hug or holding hands with a ROK comrade.
Yes, Danziger was in ‘Nam, and was an intelligence officer. He’s used Vietnamese (accurately) in some cartoons.
“Danziger served in the United States Army from 1967 until 1971. An intelligence officer and linguist during the Vietnam War, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Air Medal in 1970.” –Wikipedia
No, “O” serial number didn’t refer to blood type but to “officer.” Enlisted serial numbers could begin with E or US (for draftees), if I recall correctly. That was a long time ago.
ENLISTED Army dog tags in Viet Nam said either RA-Regular Army, US for draftees. “O” is the prefix of an officer’s serial number and IS on the tag.
Tag in my hand has:
Last Name,
First Name, Middle initial
RA 198 _ __
blood type
religious affiliation-Mine says “protestant”, but would today say “Buddhist” or “None”
(Rank is NOT on the tag, but Jeff is just trying to tell us a little about himself. Welcome Home, brother Danziger.)
Which leads me to believe that some here really DON’T know, because they weren’t there. Yes the change to using SSN instead of military number did come along in the late 70’s.
I think “gender preference” would be less risky in some combat zones today than “religion”, especially with the “boy preference” in some of those cultures.
Still, I have seen news footage of a monk burning himself. That was scary, like there was something supernatural that we don’t understand about those monks.
And when people are scared and don’t understand things, they often become bigotted.

Was “O” a blood type? Danziger is so into the news, he comes up with cartoons within hours of the subject’s happening.

“O” is a blood type….trying to figure why you asked? Didn’t see it on his dog tag.

…so when you’re mortally wounded they know to put you in a woman’s arms instead of a comrade’s arms…..
Oh, Danziger - what are you doing New Year’s Eve?

The Navy put the wrong blood type on mine, so I wore my old Coast Guard tags.
They list religion so that the chaplain knows which prayer book to use. That or gender preference could be dangerous to some PoWs in some places.

They listed religion on dog tags? :)
Funny. the Vietnam war didn’t start any anti-buddhist anger…
…and yet buddhist monks burned themselves!
Motivemagus over 13 years ago
^Frog, that goes way back. The Brits did, too, so they knew what to do with the remains…

^^The monks burned themselves to protest the Saigon regime we supported. They did not bring violence upon others.
