There’s one local traditional way of beating unemployment. Emigrate. :(

^ From what I have read first the Eastern Europeans, who had emigrated to Ireland, returned home but now emigration from Ireland mostly include the Irish. First port of call usually was the UK, easier to resettle, close by and with their high skill levels, very welcome. But despite this, managing to get higher preference are Canada, Australia & New Zealand. The US doesn’t appear too attractive but like you mention, much tougher to get into now even with desirable skills.

If you are a health care worker you can get a job in the US. Construction is not the line of work to choose here.

^ After the Irish building boom’s collapse, many construction jobs are gone so there are many construction workers on the dole. I’d say construction in the UK would be tough to get into as the Eastern Europeans who have remained here will be the immigrant competition to beat, bearing in mind building work is in the doldrums here too. However, I think Irish emigration will also be high-tech.
