I watch old TV shows and they show offices with desks side by side, front to back. Makes you appreciate your cage, er, cube.

Where I used to work, the tall cube walls were replaced with half cubes with shorter walls. Supposedly the bosses could watch out for excessive socializing. However, since there was little to no privacy for concentration, many conversations changed to long non-work group chats and participants remained seated so bosses didn’t notice. Productivity went down overall, business faltered and layoffs followed. Managers got bonuses for reducing costs.

Prime example of a single idea, “Collaboration”, allowed to run amok with basic knowledge of human beings completely ignored = STUPID.

The company I work for does the extremes. HQ is open spaced but most people work from home so it’s either isolation at home or open space at the office. I prefer “isolation” so I work from home 100% of the time.
