Yes, back when this strip first started, she did smoke cigars. In fact, the year I give up smoking cigarettes…at age 12 (1972).
I recall as a kid being given a chewing-gum cigar. Can’t remember who it would have been for.

When I finished my qualification at Nuc prototype, I put out a box of bubblegum cigars.
Take the cigar, my little ungrateful green sweetheart. Then, after the new dad has left, trade it in for a chocolate cake! See? No hurt feelings that way (also no humor, but that’s not my problem)….
