Is there some intentional reason why the cartoon was in Spanish this morning, or was it just a technical error (e.g., putting the Spanish comic image in the wrong place)?

As a Spaniard that I am (from Spain, you know, out there in Europe, south of France and east of Portugal, 9 hours drive to Paris and 16 to Prague or London …) I must say that the translation is rather poor. (By the way, I am a professional translator and also a Teacher of English as a Second Language). Also, I LOVE the English language, and feel sorry that there are some out there with such a racist prejudice against the Spanish element in the USA … I read a lot of the comic strips in English, almost daily, to keep up to date with idioms and customs … and for the sheer enjoyment of them. But it is VERY hard to translate comics in a proper way, because of the cultural baggage they have. Like trying to translate the Argentinian Mafalda into English … Greetings to all, and please, don’t use the term “wetback”. What were the Mayflower pilgrims, but people seeking freedom and opportunity? And the Scripture that they revered says that all nations are from ONE BLOOD … By the way, one of my other favourite strips is Baldo … don’t miss it!

I lived in Ecuador for two years and understand the difficulty of translating jokes and cartoons.

I’m Spanish too!! From Catalonia namely. Also half Canadian :) I agree wholeheartedly with jungleman, fellow-Spaniard AND fellow-translator. I also think that “crunch crunch” could have been translated as “ñam ñam” or so. Nevertheless, I have to own up to the fact that English has a much vaster reservoir of eating onomatopeias than Spanish.

Jeez, folks, get a grip! It’s a simple error, and it happened on Foxtrot, also.

Couldn’t find this one listed as available in Spanish, but it probably is just a glitch in the system and I appreciate tudza2 giving a translation.

Dropping a comic because of a mistake? Nah. Don’t think so. as to the racist remarks, I consider myself a right-leaning moderate but would never in a million years think of making the kind of statement Tnaturelady did. The USA is a nation of immigrants which makes us stronger. There is a right and legal way to come here, though, which my grandparents did and many of the people in the state of Colorado who speak Spanish are fifth generation native citizens.

I have to say, I am surprised by the assumptions that some people have made that this was some sort of political statement rather than the mistake it obviously was. Get a grip, people. Loosen your tinfoil hats.

Personally, as a citizen of Quebec, whose politics are comprehensible only to people who live in other multilingual countries (e.g. Belgium), I have often daydreamed over the US becoming bilingual: English and Spanish. They would learn some useful lessons about the rest of the world. They would learn about the excitement of having a chance of getting inside someone else’s culture, And they might even stop saying, “If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, then it’s good enough for me!”

Ok, I’ve stopped. You can all come out again from behind the furniture. If I don’t stop myself, I’ll go on forever.

Talking about being bilingual … actually my native and daily language is Catalan … Been in Québec MANY times, have many friends there, although my Canadian wife is from Winnipeg … :)

You PAY for English? Maybe you should pay for a Spanish class - it would be more fun. Or, if you just don’t like diversity - pay for a relaxation class so there isn’t a meltdown when you see another language.

Its a mistake, they’ll fix it - or not - and thanks to the awesome translation – all is right in the world.

So “Crunch” is the same in any language?

When I pick up a phone in the United States of America to call a company and get their voicemail directory, I would expect the directions - or prompts - to be in English. I should not have to press 1 for English although English is not the United States official spoken language.

Time to have spanish as a second language. :) Knowing a second language or even a 3rd makes dealing with the rest of the world easier. WE expect everyone to speak english. (Lived abroad for many many many years in many different countries, so argue all you want, been there seen it myself).

Bonjour Rinafarina! Ça va bien, j’espere. You’re right about a fully bilingual country, ma cher, but most of Canada is, malheureusement, not bilinugue. Here in Darkest Saskatchewan, there’s a sizable French contingent, but I have very little contact with them, and my small amount of French has rusted. On the other hand, the First Nations folks will soon be the majority here, and the white kids wll have to learn how to get along in a First Nations-centric school system.

World-wide, Mandarin is probably a person’s best bet for a second language.

Never before though about how easy it is to “dub” comics into different languages. I’m happy to know that speakers of other languages can enjoy these strips and that these talented artists have more sources of income.

I am native born in USA, but my father spoke Norwegian and my mother’s family spoke French (Canadian) and Irish.

The neighborhood I live in is multicultural. On our block alone, we have immigrant neighbors who speak Korean, Urdu, Hungarian,Ukrainian, Amharic and Spanish. Our common language is English.

Should all our immigrant friends who have struggled to learn English, now have to learn Spanish, too.

That said, I think we can all agree, humor is universal, no matter what language.

OldPossum……………I actually feed one, not on purpose, I call him Ziggy he eats dry cat food out on the back deck with the outside cats, who have ‘found’ us. I yell at him when he has had enough chow and he/she just looks up then returns to the bowl.

Am I seeing things? The cartoon that I read was in English or I’m getting really good at reading other languages (not).

They must have fixed the problem in the last couple of hours.

First, I speak English and Nihongo (Japanese).

Second, I have many friends who moved to the US from other countries.

Third, they all did so legally.

And they agree with me when I say “come legally or don’t come at all!”

I don’t why people are fussing… when we travel abroad we try to speak the native language, but they usual accommodate our english if we at least TRY to speak their language. However, if I was moving to, say, France, I would expect to need to speak French all the time in public. Is it too much to expect latinos moving the the US to speak english all the time in pubic?

I think today’s strip is funny in Spanish OR English.

I wish I could say the same for the comments. Although I laughed at the quote, “If English is good enough for Jesus, it is good enough for me.”

I think we should all learn Aramaic, which is what Jesus DID speak, at least, following that logic. I’m a Canuck who loves any language.

Duffer37: Are you suggesting that if you lived in Paris, and found a gaggle of American ex-pats, you wouldn’t speak in your native tongue? I certainly would.

My former supervisor enjoyed language classes; she learned enough Spanish to converse fluently with the Chilean caretaker, then spent a holiday in Chile. Now she’s retired, and she’s moving there for a few months to teach English. Until she sold her house, though, the fellow she had helping her with renovations was Quebecois, and they spoke French as often as English.

Last weekend, I met a charming teenager who speaks fluent English, French, Spanish, and German, is almost conversational in Tagalog, and is working on Japanese. May the gods help any guys who want to keep up with HER intellectually! :)
