Cheap champagne
A warmed over meal
2” more legroom
2’ more butt room.
In an emergency, first class gets off before women and children.
I’ve flown First Class exactly once, but I thought it was grand. Going from San Francisco to Hawaii about 15 years ago, they were offering upgrades to First Class for only $100 at check-in, and since it was a 5-hour flight I figured I’d try it. The increased legroom alone would have been worth the money (I’m 6’2”), but the unlimited free Mimosas left me VERY happy when I landed in Honolulu…
They stuck me in first class from Sydney to LA when they overbooked the cheap seats. On that rout it was no big deal. It was better when I was going the other way and had a whole row to myself and could stretch out. Ahhhhh.
The worst of it is that the fare doesn’t pay for the seat and is subsidized by the riff faff in the back.
I used to have to fly quite a bit, but it was in the days way before the benefits of Homeland Security, thank god. I haven’t had to fly since the 1980s - hard to believe now, but flying was actually a pleasant experience back then. Especially since the old AT&T, with the help of your phone bills, of course, flew me in comfort and put me up in very nice hotels wherever I was sent.
I fly internationally all the time, most often in Business class, but I have gone steerage – I mean coach – LA to Sydney (as part of a trip starting in Boston). It sucks.
Since I normally have to work (in front of clients) on the other end, sometimes within hours of stepping off the plane, getting sleep is essential when crossing timelines. I find I can’t sleep nearly as well unless the seat is horizontal – not flat, as some airlines advertise, but horizontal. But I can get that in Business Class on a few airlines now.
I also find I would rather take any major non-American airline over any domestic US flight. US airlines have become crowded, dirty hellholes with poor-to-awful customer service where you get nickled-and-dimed to death for every minor amenity. Croatia Airlines is better than almost anything flying in the continental US today, and I’m not kidding.
