It isn’t cheating because the one paying the author is the one who sets the rules. In this case the rules are to write what I tell you to write. I see no moral dilemma here.
If in Katie’s class she is asked to write a book report and told she can use Cliffs Notes, using them is not cheating since it is the teacher who sets the rules.
As a famous writer once said: “great ideas are a dime a dozen. Sit down every day for 8 hours per day, write a draft, modify it in the 2nd draft, etc. Continue until the book is finished. That’s writing”.
A client who has chapters laid out and notes to give a ghostwriter is doing a lot more than most! Ghostwriting is cheating, in a way, but I don’t think most readers would believe that most celebrities – whether in entertainment or business, or some other field – actually write their own books. One reason ghostwriters get paid well is because they’re invisible. It would be more honest, of course, to give the ghostwriter cover credit, either with the usual “with” or as co-author. And some people do that; I respect those.
