Pity the young folks who work in retail and fast food. It usually seems that the music they hear is the same every day, and it’s on a one-hour loop.

It’s not just Christmas music. It’s all the music in public places that you can’t get away from, all year round. When was the last time you ate in a restaurant where there was just silence?

Most good things, like listening to music, are better if you don’t have to do them all the time.

I was curious one time at Friendly’s, and asked one of the youthful employees how they felt about hearing 50s-60s doo-wop all day long. They seemed resigned to it, like it could have been worse. That was the first place where I heard that there was one hour of music that they heard over and over. Probably a CD on repeat.
