The point is that he is just carrying her over the threshold and she is complaining about the smallest of things; of course shoes make marks on carpet (the plush stuff anyway). The horseshoe is upside down meaning the luck “fell out” of it (upright is supposed “hold” the luck). IOW, he’s already outta luck.
