time for Elly to buy a new umbrella (when did the wind-proof umbrella first get introduced anyway?)

Elly’s comment to Lizzie in the panel after the final panel, “I am tired of un-piring you and your brother when you destroy your things. I have told you for the un-pteenth time not to do that. It fills me with such unbrage I am going to put you in umimaginable pain. Start writing your assignment in German and don’t leave out the un-lauts.”

When I was a little girl, I went rollerskating on a windy day and I discovered that if I opened my coat and held my hands out with them still in my pockets with my back to the wind, my coat acted like sails and the wind pushed me along the sidewalk.

Elly looks more shocked than mad. I expected her to be furious.

See “Un Lun Dun” for further development of the concept.

And Elizabeth is off to change her clothes, after the wind turned the umbrella into an unbrella.

I saw a good cartoon about supply and demand. A street peddler is selling umbrellas and a lady asks how much. He responds “Three dollars…” when suddenly there is the roar of a thunderclap and rain starts pouring, to which the peddler finishes his statement with “…and 75 cents”.

Man, I would have been spanked for that if I tried it at home when I was her age.

Put the umbrella in the trash and leave it there. She can go without from now on. that’s what is wrong with kids nowadays….when they break something or loose something, the parents just buy them more. Heck with that. Make them go with out.

    Lynn’s Notes:

Wordplay like this made my work difficult to translate, so it was not seen in foreign language newspapers. This problem was pointed out to me on several occasions. Still, I couldn’t resist having fun with English.

There are windproof (storm) umbrella’s. It’s a Dutch product, developed some decades ago by a Dutch student. Have a look: https://www.senz.com/en/#
