It is a messed up world when children are on leases but pets are toted around in strollers (and handbags and carriers). I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen someone in a store or restaurant with their little yippy dog. What if it pees everywhere? That’s just gross.
35 years ago, when my daughter was 2 or 3, she would run off and hide in the clothing racks at the Meijer store when I had to take her with me to do the grocery shopping. Looping our dog leash through the shopping cart and hooking it on to her coveralls saved me a lot of stress, and kept her safe. Some folks thought it was terrible of me, but 7 years later, I saw harnesses with leashes for toddlers in the stores.
I do think it is a good idea to put a harness on a very young child when out in public. It can help teach the child boundaries as well as keep the child safe. Pets in strollers, well, unless the dog is disabled I think this behaviour is a bit odd. Small dogs have become a fashion accessory and many are claiming service animal status fraudulently. This is not fair to the people that truly need a service animal or to the fashion accessory pet. I probably treat my cats better than many people treat their children – at least I have been accused of that – but my cats stay in the house, only traveling to the Vet. They get fed cat food, not people food. They are showered with love and affection. Something all children should receive.
