When I worked in factories when I was younger, they’d pay a sub-minimum “training wage”. When you got faster at your job and they might have to pay minimum wage, they’d either lay you off for a few weeks before bringing you back at the “training” wage again, or move you to a different job to continue “training”. It was a scam from the word “go” and I’m sure it still goes on.
