When I was a child in Tulsa there was a little park with a wading pool. The control to turn on the water for the pool was underground, and because it was cool and damp, garter snakes used to like to lie there. I can remember the “playground lady” knocking on my grandmother’s door and asking if I could please come get the snake out so she could fill the wading pool.
