kevin78661: When I am invited to some place for dinner, I usually bring (a) an appetizer, (b) a side dish for the meal or © appropriate adult beverage (wine/beer/etc), unless I am explicitly told not to bring something. Bringing a bouquet or flower arrangement for the table also works sometimes.
Maybe they just have a hungry dog.
