I remember trying out for my church softball team, during the tryout a line drive was hit to me and I managed to catch it with my ungloved hand and throw it to the first baseman before I started screaming. Later it turned out that at the time I had 3 glass slivers in that hand from an accident in chemistry class, they were later removed when one of them started to sever the nerve at the base of my index finger and when I caught that ball it wasn’t just the impact of catching the ball, but the glass sliver against the nerve that made me scream in pain.
At least he caught it and made the play at second to end the inning. That line drive could just as easily have undressed him on its way into the outfield.
