The “growl” from his stomach seems convincing.

Rufus needs Joel around to help him figure this out. Joel would be ready to give the kid some food quite a bit more rapidly, if he were about.

And yet in yesterday’s mail I get a grocery bag telling me that Saturday, MAY 13, is the 25th anniversary of Letter-Carrier’s “Stamp out Hunger” food drive, and to put as much non-perishables (canned) into said bag, so as to save the starving children in my neighborhood. And for only 12 cents a day, I can save a starving, fly-eaten black child in Africa by donating to this 1-800 number. I’m beginning to wonder if I’ve stopped off at the wrong planet.

In my little town in Iowa the number of kids on free and reduced price meals at school has now reached 53%. And my school district does not have near the worst rate in the area. For some kids that’s their only meal of the day, and when summer vacation starts and school isn’t in session, they don’t get that meal. Few of these kids are from families where the parents are unemployed, but they are underpaid. Certainly no reason to raise the minimum wage more often than every 30 or 40 years. Corporate welfare is the priority.
