Here in Massachusetts, they’re known as Eastern Coyotes.

Yup. Usually wolves kill coyotes but on one island in Canada the population of each was low enough that they were willing to breed and now they’re expanding across the northeast. Bigger than coyotes but they tend to go after the smaller rodents like one rather than the bigger prey.

Wow, I didn’t know about the coywolf until I read this strip. Believe it or not, there is a pretty well-researched and written article on coywolves on Wikipedia, well above the standard of others of their articles.

Some coy wolves have been called chupacabras. Yes, the legendary monster’s description matches a coy wolf so people who have seen the coy wolf and not known what it was figured they are Chupacabras. The only problem is that coy wolves never lived in Puerto Rico where the first stories of Chupacabras came from, so they think the first “chupacabras” were some kind of feral mutt.
