    Well, I was confused about CQD, as I am just a young thing and wasn’t around at the beginning of the last century. For others so confused, I offer this:

    The CQ was a general morse telegraph call (perhaps, “seek you” — and you thought all those acronyms were new with text messaging), with the D standing for distress. And…even though SOS had been adopted and used by 1910, apparently Nemo is more of an old-fashioned romantic and imagines the ship using CQD.
