Sky has nailed it on the head. Being unemployed and looking for employment five days a week, I know where they’re both coming from.
How about BRAT? She may be correct but it’s rude to say such to her mother who is doing the best she can under the circumstances.
And still relevant today. Only they may not hire you because they don’t want to be “hired away” even though such job prospects are dim and slim-to-none.
“Under” employed is still Employed. At least she has taken the steps to start becoming independent and self sufficient.
