How would he know about the “varied” landscape? He’s approaching from the west. Charlotte is in western NC. In fact, his destination, Durham, is in the piedmont region through which you have to travel to get to the sandhills, which are further toward the east.
I hope Jim is not using the NC map that the writers of The Andy Griffith Show used. They just found some random town names and put them in the same area. One episode had a lady riding a bus from Mayberry (MT Airy) through Siler City to "MountPilot (Pilot Mountain). On the real map, that would be a trio of over 200 miles each way. They got their tv from Raleigh, which is over 150 miles away. To get Raleigh tv, they would need a 100 foot antenna pole. Why would they do that with Winston Salem and Greensboro stations nerer?
Mayberry was supposedly based on Mt Airy but was not necessarily supposed to be at that location. There is a Siler City (where Frances Bavier retired to. I have seen her house there and visited her gravesite) but Mt. Pilot was not suppose to be Pilot Mountain.
