I always felt like this story didn’t do much. It really didn’t have a good beginning and there was no ending to it. The readers were left hanging and nothing was ever resolved.

While all this adventuring by Alley Oop and Lola had been going on another planet, many miles North of Area 49 out from the Bearing Sea passed the Alaska side and International Date Line into Russian waters, several ships are leaving the area. One a Russian survey ship, the other a larger salvage ship flying the Russian Maritime flags on their sterns. In the other direction toward Alaska flies an advanced airship designed and built by the father and son team of the Short family. Short in stature, dwarfs, but only in body, in all other particulars they are giants. their mission a failure on all sides. But the Navy liaison Admiral M. M. “Duke” Morrison will have a satellite in geosynchronous orbit for the next team to get at its secrets. The wealth of knowledge that Dr. Dark took with him to a watery grave is too important to be left alone for long. First to solve the crab problem.
So they take Big Red Rover airship are & are heading back to the Aleutian Islands after dropping off their passengers. A female adventurer and her charge, an heiress girl of red hair and her sandy colored dog back to the Big Bear Lodge. But unbeknownst to them all the infamous Dr. Dark is far from dead and far from trapped.
Undersea a submarine of mostly Japanese design with elements of German workmanship (snorkel) and other modifications more advanced than when the sub was originally constructed in 1940 at Kiel now rests on the bottom. One even more modern in some elements than the most up to day submarines of the 21st century including the Seaview III.
On it and scuttles around it is the largest crab ever, a bright red color, that seems to be guarding it. Only snatching a shark or two to eat while it remains a stead fast sentinel for many decades. All the while a pounding continues, like a ghastly metallic heart beating with an unholy and abnormal persistence and vitality within that strangely intact hull. The beats getting stronger. Coming from this submarine, that has lain there for 75 years.
In side the sub things are clean, almost no dust. Bare and functional and mostly like a submarine of the second world war except for a transparent tube fogged up where the powerful pounding was coming from. Even with all of his preternatural brilliance Dr. Nacht, as the Germans of the Third Reich called him, makes mistakes.
The release lock isn’t working due to a short from a lazy electrician who used substandard wiring when he had it first installed. But this will not stop him. He gets the panel off then trips the lock sequence and the cylinder glides around itself opening poring out cold mist as the most dangerous man in history gets out to walk the Earth again.
(We can’t see his face clearly but the interior lights come up automatically on the bridge where his suspended animation tube is located putting his face into shadow.) He begins to laugh in a way that if others were there they would feel their blood run colder than the clean cold air. The world may soon tremble unless he meets Alley Oop and friends. He has never met anyone like Alley nor Alley has ever met the personification of evil like Doctor Dark.
