I don’t have nearly as much of a problem with people talking loudly together as I do with one person talking loudly on the phone.

I am not sure who is really rude in this comic. I do not think it is appropriate to expect others to be quiet ( I do not mean talking loudly on their cell phones) in public settings such as the coffee shop or a restaurant. I was told to shut up at a tea room once because a woman sitting alone reading. I told her I planned to continue talking to my friend ( not on the phone) and having a good time because that is why I came to the tea room and if she wanted to read to go to the library. My friends meet regularly at a coffee shop and go to talk and meet each other and they have been told to shut up. They also told the person that they could go home, to the library or to their work place if their talking was bothering them. Sorry I think a coffee shop or a restaurant is not a place to do your work find a more appropriate location.

Diva Diane-The coffe shop promotes people working there, saying “free WiFi”. My brother travels a lot and does his quiet computer work in a coffee shop because it’s more like home, with people coming and going. Some business people, brokers use coffeeshops, bookstores, etc. to meet clients, which is a little noisy, but handier for both parties. But, as noted by van pelt, there was a NY Times article about that study, recently, that explained why (other) folks talking on the phone is so annoying. The post office has a sign which says please don’t talk on the phone when you are in line”. Good luck with that. Just for my own sanity, knowing I can’t block it out, I eavesdrop, pretending it’s a story or fictional program, or soap-opera. It’s like standing in line at the supermarket & reading the tabloids. It’s much easier on ME than standing there tapping my foot looking at my watch.

Keeps hand free. Where I work at I don’t hear the Admin Assist phone ring or when she dials out she has a ear receiver, me and others get confused when she starts talking. Val and others nothing you can do about people on cell phones. My daughter in a restaurant would annoy others as she chatted away. We told her about this, reply just get over it.

My family went to a movie, a gentleman seated several rows below us was wearing a bluetooth earpiece that was disturbing the movie. (Those things have bright lights) Another movie patron finally got him to remove it.

When everybody speaks quietly to their partners in public, everybody can hear their own conversations. When everybody speaks loudly, NOBODY can.

Talking on a cell or Bluetooth like that in public is just egocentric to the nth degree. Why do they think that everyone else finds their conversation interesting? I’ve heard men discuss their girlfriends possible pregnancy on a bus- no doubt to her mortification if she knew the news was being broadcast.

I’ve talked to others in line about the conversation in normal volume…just loud enough that the offender can hear. Kibbitzing “I don’t think she should do it…” “wow it must be really funny we should ask what the joke was”…heck, if they’re talking loud enough for everyone to hear we may as well join in on it! If they talk loud enough for everyone to hear they are inviting us to join them.
My pharmacy has “please finish cell phone calls before approaching counter” posted at their counters.
Gosh I’m beginning to think that these people have crappy cellphones…as good as two tin cans connected with string or was made by Bell himself!
