Trump has said Obama is stupid for giving up the element of surprise in attacking Mosul. That’s incredibly naive. The Iraqi government said they would retake Mosul the day ISIS managed to seize the city. You can’t mount an operation that size, with multiple forces without it being noticed. The Iraqis also are giving civilians a chance to leave or seek shelter before the fighting starts.

He’s suggested that ISIS leaders will flee if they know the city is going to be taken. Putting aside the fact that Raqqa is where the ISIS leaders are, there’s nothing we’d like more than for ISIS leaders to make a break for it through the open desert where they could be pounded with airstrikes & little chance of civilian casualties.
