While survival of the mutant is of obvious importance, I was referring to the survival of the mutation. Initially, they are almost always recessive characteristics and need to be advantageous enough to gain a significant population base to survive competition with their more dominant competition. Actually, it is pick them all, and see what survives to pass the mutation on for long enough.

Kind of, except that it’s not usually survival that’s the issue but reproductive success.
