I finally broke down and got Caller-ID which gives me the ability to cut off a call before it can start recording on my answering machine. This has done wonders for my sanity in this election season, though I expect to go totally insane no matter who wins.
I set my default ring to “silent” and assign an audible ring tone to the numbers in my contact list. I only get trash calls if they leave a message, and they seldom do that.

Register with the National Do Not Call program and then turn in the callers. Soon you will not get any “TM” or robo calls.<><me

I just don’t answer the phone until they give me voice sample . . . and usually not then.
