It’s been automation more than globalization, really. Free trade creates and destroys jobs, but it generally creates more than it destroys. Maybe with all this automation we can afford to pay people more for the work that they do, and give them more time off to enjoy life.
Gig economy is the next big thumb to hold down US workers. You can blame globalization all you want, but until workers are respected by the haves at the top it won’t matter what scam they make up next, it will not help the middle class. We could unionize, have a livable wage, family friendly employment and we could have more people going for the American dream. Or we could keep feeding the 1% off of our hard work.
The stranglehold workers had on their lives is gone. It’s now time to make our wages so low that Malaysia will send their worst assembly jobs here. Gotta cut all the regs on worker safety and pollution too, and product purity. The Age of the Boss looked like it was in trouble for a few decades, but the workers will soon know their place.
Reminds me of bush’s brilliance; confronted with a man who said he had to work three jobs just to survive, he responded, “How typically American!” As he returned to the job he never did.
Some ( including Ariail? ) just can’t deal with the changes that Technology has brought about. While jobs have been declining since the 1970s, U.S. manufacturing OUTPUT has increased by over 35% over the past two decades. This adds a record $2.4 trillion to our economy. So, goodbye to gloom-and-doom! Let’s focus on our real problems, please.
Fortunately for the rest of us the top are making more than ever. They have amassed more wealth at the top (by holding that spear) than 1/2 of the rest of us have. They really earned it, just ask a Republican.
And Hillary was right when she said you can’t legislate off-shoring. You can only hope to contain it.And The Dumbold STILL won’t bring his off-shored production here, while promising higher wages and more manufacturing. And since OUTPUT has increased bt 35%, WHY haven’t wages kept up?
