America's first Air Force included hot air balloons. Named after 16th-century Explorer Giovanni De Verrazzano, New York's Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is spelled incorrectly! Brazil once tried to sell an aircraft carrier on eBay!
The Air Force as a separate service started in 1947, but it grew out of the Army Air Corp so our history is tied to that of the Army. We did have a general in the mid 90’s that tried to dress us up like we were in the Navy (amongst other things)… that twit did so much damage in the few years he was in charge… I retired from the Air Force shortly after they replaced him with someone with a bit more sense.

According to Wikipedia, a Staten Island Ferry boat named after the explorer was named correctly, while the bridge was misspelled.

I guess the person naming the bridge was taking a “Z”.

Actually there was no such thing as the “Air Force” until after WWII — my Dad was in the Army Air Corp in WWII which later became the Air Force.
