Thatababy: Whoa! Once upon a time, people lived without refrigeration!! No cold drinks on a hot day!! No Popsicle! No putting ice cubes down Dad's back!!
We had refrigerators as far back as I can remember, but we had neighbors that still had ice boxes with daily ice delivery. The ice plant was just a block or so from where I lived, so on a hot summer day, I would go watch them make ice. The filled huge containers with city water, and put them in refrigerated salt water to freeze. Then they took them out and dipped them in warm water long enough that they could dump the blocks of ice out on a slide that took them into the freezer room where they were stored and cut up for delivery. The molds were handled by an electric overhead winch that ran on a beam that was in tern running on tracks, so they could reach any part of the floor. The salt water was under the floor, and covered with floor panels much like a raised floor in a computer room today.
I’ve seen pictures of my hometown where they were cutting the huge blocks of ice from the ponds and covering them in sawdust before taking them to the icehouse. I think the picture is from the early 1930s.
