I was in the process of processing the “smaller is better” meme, had just about worked my way down to the cell phone of my dreams, when the first smartphones came out. I had to choose between a practically thumb-sized cell that did nothing more than cellphones did, or a certifiable brick of a smartphone. I went with the brick. Curiously, its replacement was still, from a design standpoint, the smartest smartphone I ever had. It could actually close on itself like an old clamshell cell, which protected the phone buttons and the computer’s screen and writing area. Plus, it was the first phone for which I could create my own ringtones, even if I was limited to one ringtone for everyone. So I made one that sounded like a Starfleet communicator going off. And I carried the phone behind my right hip so I could open it like Captain Kirk.
