    No, you wouldn’t.The Can in Canary refers to canine. As in the dogs found on those islands.

    Actually, imnotreal2 , is correct. Check out Wiki. There are several possibilities for why they were named for dogs, but they definitely were NOT named for the birds.

    “The connection to dogs is retained in their depiction on the islands’ coat-of-arms (shown above).

    “What is certain is that the name of the islands does not derive from the canary bird; rather, the birds are named after the islands.”

    The birds are native to the Canary Islands, Azores, and Madeira.
