There’s mosques in Israel, you know. Second most important in Islam, the al-Aqsa Mosque is in Jerusalem. If the Israelis can handle that, why not the US?

Gene Lyons wrote about the man behind the Park51 project: Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf’s 2004 book, “What’s Right With Islam Is What’s Right With America,” unequivocally condemned terrorism. “The truth is that killing innocent people is always wrong,” he wrote, “and no argument or excuse, no matter how deeply believed, can ever make it right. No religion on earth condones the killing of innocent people, no faith tradition tolerates the random killing of our brothers and sisters on this earth … Islamic law is clearly against terrorism.” Invited to speak at a 2003 synagogue service for Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter murdered by Islamist fanatics in Pakistan, Imam Rauf addressed himself to the victim’s father. “Not only today I am a Jew,” he said, “I have always been one, Mr. Pearl.” Also, he explained, a Christian and a Muslim, invoking “the moral equivalency of our Abrahamic faiths.” Concludes Lyons: “To portray such a man as a terrorist is beyond dishonest. Calling all Muslims terrorists is the equivalent of calling all Christians snake handlers; all Jews, Christ killers. It’s KKK-style hate mongering, a rejection of the basic premises of Americanism, and a propaganda gift to the lunatic cultists of al-Qaida such as they could never achieve on their own.”

The whole thing is just more fear mongering and hate-building. If it had been any house of worship but a mosque, maybe even a temple* to satan, no-one but the local zoning board would have heard a thing about it.

I have no idea what type of worship structure a satanist needs, but temple seems as good as anything.

I still say have the Imam and other Muslims involved with the project swear on the Koran that they condemn the 9/11 attacks and al-Queda.

As far as FoxNews goes, it’s good to have at least 1 alternative to the left-wing party liners on the other so called ‘news’ channels.

You are right. You got to have someone (Fox News) out there lying so we have contrast to the truth.

Personally, I beileve in the Darma and the Buddha.

But unfortunately, anyone should see that there are nuts in the world, like Daniel Pearl’s murderers.

Most muslims read te same Quran as them, but they won’t kill. It’s just not in them (in other words, they are sane human beings).

And there are violent scenes in the Bible, too. In Genesis, Jacob’s two sons murder an entire tribe just because one of them slept (consensually) with their sister.

Richard Perle’s people are a lot bigger threat than Daniel Pearl’s killers. AEI and the right wing prey on everyone with “shock value” just like “shock and awe”- but its social devastation.

btw, there IS a strip club on the next block up from the proposed cultural center, and a 21 story building going up across the street that will block any potential view of “ground zero”, but that doesn’t matter to the headless chicken crowd.

Professor Bleen – where I work, the hotdogs are indeed halaal. I had halaal meat for lunch today (but it wasn’t a hotdog.) Quite a lot of our students are Moslem, and guess what – they’re not terrorists!!!

McVeigh was an atheist, Tom. Just because he was white and had a short haircut doesn’t make him some kind of Baptist.

Motive, those lines are all well and good, but he was pressed multiple times to condemn Hamas as a terrorist organization, and he would not…so, as is usual, the general is preferred with these types of mouthpieces over the specific. It allows for “wiggle room” when they have to go back to their fellows.

I will say this for the cartoon. I love the shaded lines denoting the hazy outlines of buildings off in the distance as seen through the torrential deluge.

Nice cartoon, but at the risk of repeating myself, the proposed building in question is NOT a mosque, it is an Islamic Center.
