It is one of three schools of philosophy. Say you come across a person who needs help due to an emergency. The virtue ethical person would help them because it is the right thing to do. The other two schools of philosophy would also help them, but for different reasons (out of a sense of duty or because it is the wise thing to do).
Some would say that only philosophers would waste time thinking about such things.
