There is actually a small ethical dairy movement in the UK called Cow Nation, which treats the farmer as the cows’ agent, selling their produce to pay for their upkeep. Artificial insemination with gender-selected sperm is used to ensure that no more male calves are born than there is work for, calves stay with their mother and get a share of her milk, and elderly cattle get to retire and aren’t killed unless they get so decrepit that their vet thinks they should be put down.

I’ve never heard of Cow Nation, but the way cows are treated in the U.S. is criminal! Cows are constantly kept pregnant, calves are taken from them immediately causing the cows to wail and cry for their babies. A cow should be able to live 20 years but are killed and turned into hamburger and soup by the time they’re 3 or 4. This is why I will only buy non-dairy milk, ice cream and cheese. I hope you’ll think about it also.
