I remember a Saturday Night Live skit about a small-town newspaper that was looking to decide on headlines. The date was December 8th, 1941. The reporters were all discussing things relevant to their small town such as tornado watch or vandalism at the public school. One reporter kept talking about the noteworthy event the day before, but the others were asking him how is that relevant news to their town?
@ wellinever. I agree! Lynn Johnston was her own harshest critic in this comic strip.Many readers don’t seem to appreciate that.If I could only processes a small degree of her self awareness I’d be happy!
Keep in mind a couple of factors:1.) Elizabeth was rudely interrupting her mother, who had been listening to the radio prior to Elizabeth’s entrance.2.) Had she said something about herself getting hurt and needing medical attention, of course that would take precedence. However, nothing she said was of an emergency nature.Children are to be seen and not heard. What if Elly was watching the news on November 22nd, 1963, July 20th, 1969 or September 11th, 2001? Elizabeth would be told to stop gossiping and that some serious news is happening.
Kids should e allowed some leeway, they are not grown up yet. I am sure glad you were not my mother. I always stop and listen when I can (the news repeats) and if I am talking to someone else, I usually put my arm around them and ask them to wait a minute. There is no need to be rude to them.

Kid says he’s flunking in school and may have to go to summer school, Dad says, “That’s nice.” Kid says he’s thinking of just dropping out, Dad says “Sure.” Kid talks about his first acid trip, Dad says “Whatever you think is right.” Kid leaves, Mom comes in and asks what kid had to say. Dad, head still buried in newspaper, “Oh, nothing important.”
Parents are allowed to do things they want. The mom should have told Lizzie at the very start that she was listening to something and she would talk to Lizzie in 10 minutes or whenever. Parent should not drop whatever they are doing to give the child attention. Children can learn to wait.

And that is why most kids respond “Fine” or “nothing” when parents ask how school is or what is happening in school.
