Considering the recent science news, the joke could have replaced “Magnetic Waves” with “Gravitational Waves”.

The cartoonist has obviously mixed up magnetic waves, which have been known about for over 150 years. (And fundamental to the understanding of electricity), and GRAVITATIONAL waves, which were theorized by Albert Einstein, and recently observed experimentally with some elaborate equipment by scientists, making headlines in the news.
