I think this was an early phase of smart phones and the concurrent social networks, the geeks did pioneer this, but they moved on, and the newbs moved in.
An original geek here. (Worked on design of personal computers in the ‘70s, ’80s and ’90s.) I don’t know a single computer design engineer who ever published food photos on social media. We always made fun of those people. They’re SOMEthing, but not real geeks.
These two are more poseurs than anything else. I would be surprised if the Trekkers in the audience didn’t take pictures of their Gagh before tucking in.

I have an expanded definition of geeks. I believe “we” have a wide variety of interests. I know many “food geeks” who take pictures of their food.

Just from the size of the 2 real geeks in this ’toon, they spend zero time taking pictures, and minimal time eating the food!

The only time I ever took a picture omy food was when I got a cherry with 2 stems in it. Besides I thought these 2 characters were not geeks, per se.

foodies will post pics of their feats and that which they are about to tuck in, be it smackerel of hunny or flaming saganaki or a shrimp roll.
Sometimes sci-fi and food geek overlap. Recalling G’Kar’s observation on what eaarthers call “Swedish meatballs” on Babylon 5.
