Years ago, I was (briefly) a “nostalgia freak” and this included American coins from the first half of the 20th century. I was a (briefly) a store cashier at the time, and currency of this sort came from many folks’ pocket change……the coins were interesting, but had seen so much travel in their busy lives that hardly any of them came any where near “mint” condition. I had a regular customer who was a “pro” coin collector, and his pet item was Buffalo Head nickels. He’d buy rolls of nickels at the bank, go through them for anything interesting, re-roll them, and pass them to me as partial payment for whatever groceries he was buying that day. I’d break open the rolls, and be fascinated by all the “Buffaloes” there that this guy considered “unfit” for a serious collector. And they would thus pass back out into mainstream America.

That kid’s going to have a hard time selecting their nursing home one day…. because he’ll have to go to Somalia to find one bad enough.
