    The oil is still going to come out of the ground only it will be moved by rail cars and tanker trucks. These are better options because…?

    What’s overlooked is that there are already refineries closer to Canada that can be refitted to handle those tar sands, but then the products might stay in the U.S. instead of being exported.

    The pipeline only provides 35 permanent jobs, and gee, refitting those other refineries might actually provide MORE “new” jobs than in Texas.

    But the tar sands themselves, extraction, refining, and use, are the real problem, not transportation.

    The planet remains habitable by humans only if we leave most of the hydrocarbons in the ground. Since the free-market alternative (a price on carbon) has been flatly ruled out by conservatives, the best gift we can give the future is to throw every available wrench into the system. Good on Obama. The GOP are going to be the villains in this story.
