What a shame! Those people are trapped in Arizona and can’t move to any of the other 49 states or D.C.! And they’re limited to 12 months on the dole-more than most people need in a lifetime! And they presumably have no relatives, friends, or fellow church members to help them!Gosh, they sure are liberal, Obama-era victims!
Most people on welfare are able to find some type of work and are able to do it if they just put in some effort. Without time limits, the temptation is too strong to rely on government assistance for one’s entire lifetime. Ms. Sorenson does a disservice to these people by trying to deny them a chance to contribute to society. Welfare to work should be encouraged; not discouraged as Ms. Sorenson attempts to do.
Somehow the conservatives think you can just “fire” people who need welfare the way you would a bad employee. They never stop to think that the people they stop paying welfare to are still around and like most people they are going to try to survive. Their kids my grow up to be gang bangers because they have little opportunity. The adults may turn to crime just to put some food on the table. We really need to have programs that allow people to lift themselves out of poverty and become productive members of society. All these witch hunts and punitive budget limitations to nothing to solve the problems. We need data driven, evidence based, long term programs that actually prove themselves to solve the problem. Not a lot of political ideology that only ends up making things worse.
As far as the new deal public works programs thing goes what happened to all of the non exsistant shovel ready jobs that we were promised as a part of the massive run up in national debt?
This is a good cartoon. Notice that the woman is not asking for welfare. She is asking for decent work at a decent rate of pay and a decent place to live. If society provided all that for everyone, then there would be little need for welfare.
Well something had to be done and austerity seems pretty popular right now, “…On all indicators of individual prosperity, such as per capita personal income and average wage, Arizona is below the national average—and generally has lost ground over time.”http://arizonaindicators.org/economy
ALEC = American Legislative Exchange Council..A Corporate Lobbying group that creates “Sample” legislation for everything from “Stand Your Ground” laws to “Let’s Legalize Loan Sharking” laws and hands them out to TeaOP Legislators in all 50 states..
My mother worked for the Department of Social Services/Family Independence Agency for over 35 years. She saw families that had been dependent upon welfare for 5 generations and working on #6. She saw mom’s walking their children, who just reached adulthood, into the building so they could start to collect their own Welfare, while those same mom’s were also pregnant or having new kids to keep that ADC (aid to dependent children) coming. And this was not one or two families, but a significant percentage of the caseloads she saw. IT IS NOT UP TO GOVERNMENT TO GIVE EVERYBODY A JOB AND A HOME! People have to earn that with their own skills.

I read recently that about 2/3 of welfare recipients HAVE a job, or a couple of part-time jobs, but are paid so poorly they can’t make a go of it….

Is there really anything politicians can do to stop a free enterprise from shipping jobs overseas other than socializing that business?
