This is the stereotypical kid in summer. I actually think it’s good for them to feel boredom now and then. It helps develop the notion that one must not be doing something every minute of the day. When my kids say, “I’m bored,” I don’t chastise or say, “I can make work for you.” I just smile and move on.
I was always making projects for my kids in summer. Of course, the 3 oldest were in my Cub Scout den, and my daughter had fun just watching her brothers.
That’s the beauty of homeschooling. If my kids complained, I could threaten them with more school, and they knew it wasn’t an idle threat. Actually, that’s one of the reasons we switched to an 11 month, 4 days a week schedule. Just having one summer month off is enough relaxing, after that, they’d start fighting more. If we were taking a trip, we’d do that when everyone else is in school, but that was usually more like a long field trip.
I’m afraid my summers did not have a chance to become boring. Aside from my paper route, I either detassled corn for a few bucks or, until I got a job in High School, worked on our Victorian money-and-time-pit of a house that was always in need of drastic repairs and annual painting. Never went to camp.
The kids around here were all outside all the time the first week out of school, now we hardly see them. I was out all day everyday in summer when I was a kid. :)
