It takes more oil to produce “corn ethanol” than the petroleum it replaces.. fertilizer, farming equipment, insecticides, etc. Reducing consumption, not replacing the fuel is the answer. We still need a new cook in the CAFE.
Bruce, you got me and fennec. Diesel ran his first engine on vegetable oil and figured that would be the primary fuel. Even producing hempseed oil has its costs, but growing the right variety DOES make more sense than smoking a tar ball! :-))
tigger- come on already! Those Gulf lease areas were opened, and leased, long before Obama got in– the Senate. The areas he identified for review and POSSIBLE leasing along the east coast were also “shallow water” areas.
btw “deep water” that is highly risky means over 1,000 meters. There are thousands of drill permits issued for that before Obama got in- we can thank previous folks for both opening those areas, reducing restrictions in leases, and removing oversight- it was that potato farmer Cheney.
Not all hemp has refinable quantities of the psychotic drug THC. Canada grows considerable quantities of the low THC industrial variety, and to my knowledge farmers are not getting high, or if they are, forgive them, farming is tough. Hemp is easy to grow and has many uses.
Ethanol has its place in the energy mix, but not if in competition with human and animal food or require high amounts of energy to produce. Brazil has become more or less energy independant by producing large quantities of ethanol from the stalks of cane sugar, which is an economic source in Brazil.
Maybe the real criminals are selling pot(s of gold)? If we can have the largest spill in history because of no inspections or not following procedures, and “industry” demands we NOT hold up further very risky drilling until safety and compliance can be checked, because a whole 1,200 jobs, in the very short term, are at temporary risk– somebody’s smoking something a lot worse (like meth or crack) than Acapulco gold!!
Human, there are those who would like medical marijuana abolished, but they are in the minority, and the chances of them going backwards, is slim to none. I believe recreational use WILL pass in Calif., and hopefully I see more states added before my time on earth is over

Any diesel engine out there can burn hemp seed oil. IIRC that was the fuel used by it’s inventor.
Plus - the seed cake left over is high in protein and can be processed into food much like they do with soy.
Just two of the many uses of industrial hemp that will never be legalized because politicians are afraid it wold be political suicide.
