While I don’t disagree with you (nor necessarily agree): How about Iran (a Muslim state), or Israel (a Jewish state), China (an Atheist state), or The United Kingdom (an Anglican state) among others? In reality, the Holy See is the smallest of the religious states.

Most other religions don’t have the organization of the Catholic Church, or predate most nation-states.
