The church teaches tolerance and loving your fellow man. The conservative right seems to believe in “doing unto others” to make them conform to what they believe.

You have to tell us what you mean by “unity”. How much unity do you want, and why? Unity in every way? Or just some ways? Without some detail, this is a slogan rather than a thought.

There are a number of multicultural countries which function pretty well, and some that don’t. The reason can’t be simply multiculturalism, since it can work both ways. Canada is multicultural. Toronto is amazingly multicultural, and it’s a pretty good place to live.

Is that the Holy Spirit radiating light in the background?

Big difference here, Steve. One used his power to obstruct, denigrate, and maintain the status quo. The other is, so far, using his skills toward more positive goals: inclusion, compassion and facing the realities of living on a clean planet!

That’s interesting. First, just on the question of multiculturalism, the US has been multicultural for a long time. There’s a Jewish subculture, for instance, a Chinese subculture, a South Asian subculture, and so on, to say nothing of the Afro-American subculture. There are places in Louisiana where the first language is French. And places in Pennsylvania where the first language is a kind of low German. When I lived in Cambridge, I lived in the Portuguese part of town, and of course the Italian section of Boston is famous. I bet every city has its ethnic enclaves. And yet the country hangs together. So I don’t understand mike’s point.I have some fairly strong “libertarian” tendencies, that is, I locate a lot of what matters to me in the freedom of the individual, but I also have a strong feeling of community, and somehow these two feelings get along just fine. I think about it the way I think about language. You can’t have a language without a community of speakers, but each speaker has something individual to say.

They are all the American culture, we’re a salad., not a melting pot. Each culture brings their own special ideas and talents, which is what makes us great.

“Is unity to be desired when it conflicts with personal freedom?”.No..“Who loses the right to the exercise of their individual freedom?”.No one loses the right to exercise their freedom. In Libertarianism your free to do as you wish as long as you do not violate others rights. BTW, you do NOT have a right to NOT be offended. Put on your big person underwear..“given that really no nation is lacking cultural diversity, where do we go from there? ".Nobody has an obligation to make anyone else happy or be un-offended..“Does my objection to your exercise of your personal freedom to practice your customs outweigh your right to practice them?”.No it does not. As long as your rights are not violated, I’m free to worship as I see fit.
