Alix: What are you doing?
Phil: Cooking dinner.
Alix: What's IN that?
Phil: Lots of yummy stuff.
Alix: Can you be more specific?
Phil: Nope, but you'll love it.
Alix: As learner dads go, he's a quick study.
Growing up, my mother made something she called “Stuff”. It was simple, easy and when I had kids, they loved it. Even some of the neighbor kids. I’d invite them at times. I still make it and live alone, but now, have enough for 3 days. No way to cut it down since it had cans of… stuff in it! When they asked “What’s for dinner?” and the reply was “STUFF!” I got one huge “YAY!!!”When one of these neighbor boys got married years later, his wife was lamenting about how to cook interesting meals as she was not too good in the kitchen. I told her how to make Stuff. Then I told her if [D] asked what it was…tell him this. "Oh…it’s just some… “Stuff”… I had around the house.! He paused, then looked at her skeptically and said….“You’ve been talking to [Me] haven’t you???”
The answer was always “frog stew”. The kid down the street loved it, her mom couldn’t believe she would eat “frog stew”. It tasted like chicken fried steak(that day).
Be interesting to now what l Phil is cooking. I feel sad like everyone else count down though forgotten this Sunday or next Sunday? I hope next Sunday pushing for dailies as long as I can as be a sad time here.
If it’s soup, I can easily imagine that Phil cut up large leaves of rainbow chard and kale, then put them in the soup, where they wilted. I wouldn’t expect Alix to know what chard is.Lots of yummy stuff? Cut up pieces of cod and certain spices, such as thyme and oregano. Those spices could easily be smelled in the kitchen, drawing Alix in. Again, she may not know what oregano is.
My mother in law made something she called Guck. It was kind of a rite of passage as a bride for me to cook it. It’s actually a very tasty and easy casserole. With ingredients one usually has about.

Why couldn’t Phil be Calvin’s stepfather? The lad doesn’t like his mother’s cooking (thinking it’s a gross, living mush).

She seems to be looking not so pre-teen anymore. Definitely becoming a young girl instead of a “kid sister”. I hate that this is coming to an end.
