It’s an excuse to down piles of other food, including sweets, that they now “deserve” because they had a Diet Coke or some Crystal Light.
The chemicals in the sweeteners are now thought to confuse natural appetite suppressants in the body and instill sugar cravings, and therefore contribute to obesity.
Joy loves feeling self-righteous…. and earning “rewards” later.
Anyway… this poor kid.He has no idea what that stuff is that they want…and they have no idea lemonade is called that because there’s real fruit in it.

It may look mean, but it’s just a defense mechanism. For one thing, they’re not going to shell out hard cash for something that later that day they can drink gallons of something similar or at least almost the same color for free from the bubbling machine, next to the fountain of brown chocolaty stuff at the Careless Cow Buffet. (It’s enchilada day, and it will wash down their huge helpings of their favorite version made with industrial yellow somewhat cheese-like product and extra gummy spicy brown gravy substitute.) .Diverting for a moment: Today will be a day at the buffet they will remember, for today they will realize that they’ve been saps for using the chocolate fountain for things like the cheesecake and frozen non-dairy dessert, when all along they could be pumping it straight into big old iced tea glasses. Oh, the joy. (They will jealously guard their discovery, although Joy will tell Verla, which will let Jerry in on the action. But there’s a bond between sisters, and Joy feels she should be kind to Verla because Joy found such a good man, while Verla is making do with someone who would filch her panties, if they weren’t too large for him.).But mostly they have a fundamental problem with ingestion of anything while standing up. I mean, look around. There’s not even anything to lean on. .In addition, when he closes down, they’re planning to make him pay for the lemons, water, sugar, and rental on the pitcher, glasses and driveway space. And it just doesn’t seem right that what he pays includes some of their own money. They didn’t achieve their kind of lifestyle by throwing money away like that. .But Timmy knows they’ll come back at the end of the day offering to drink up his “dead stock,” and he’s just remembered seeing that jug of weed killer in the garage.
