Just putting people out of jobs. And the machines aren’t all that accurate anyway. And when you pay, or try to pay, with cash, you better have crisp new bills because they sure don’t like the used ones.
I use them all the time, and if an occasional problem occurs, the light flashes and someone comes to help. Automation is just a fact of life and has been for a long time. All modern businesses use machines that do the work that once would have been done by people. You might just as well argue against using e-mail because if you don’t write a letter, you’re putting a mail carrier out of work.
I draw my line in the sand (and I suspect Herb would, too) when it comes to giving companies free advertising. I always remove the license plate frame that advertises the car dealership I bought the car from, even if I can’t take off the other identifying info they attach directly to the car.
And how do they know I paid for every item I bagged myself at checkout? I haven´t seen people keeping an eye over me when I do, and the guy at the door, if there is one, won´t look for every little item in the ticket.
It never fails, when I am in a hurry and just a few items, I foolishly try, ONCE AGAIN, the automated checkout. 1 out of 5 times, I may get through without a glitch at the grocery store. So I gave up and just use the checker.

Many groceries don’t offer an employee discount anymore. The margins are as thin as they can get.

I pretty much refuse to use them. I’ll wait for a real person.

I’m with you, Herb. If I’m paying the same price, I’m using the same checkers.

The self checkouts I use are weight-sensitive, so they know if I put an unscanned item into my shopping bag.

The reason that the stores started doing it is to pay one checker instead of four.I won’t use them.
