When I was 13 I found out our phone reached the closet under the stairs. My mother wanted to know just why and who and what needed me to be secretive. No phone in the closet she decreed. Sigh
Whoops guess I was wrong, they already have a phone close by. However all she really needs is a longer cord. She could buy that herself, Very inexpensive.
Phones didn’t have modular plugs and cords in those days. They were hard-wired and no one was allowed to touch them but phone company employees – it was illegal. No kidding, it was actually illegal to connect your own phone to the system, or even wire in a longer cord yourself.
I never wore those old overalls when I was working for the now-extinct Bell System, but many of the old phone guys back then came to work every day in bib overalls just like this guy – never wore anything else.

And most homes had those. Usually one per level.
