My little dog chases squirrels as they run along the hydro wires that cross our back yard. An exercise in futility! Leads me to wonder if any dog ever caught a squirrel?

Our dog also caught a baby squirrel once. It was still alive, and Hubby and I fed it canned bitch’s milk and Pedialite, but it didn’t survive. He still chases adult squirrels, but they run up trees and vanish; he gets the most confused expression when they “disappear into thin air”.

Pepper caught a squirrel once, but she has been trying for 11 years.

We had a St. Bernard that tried for several years to catch a squirrel in the backyard. He would run at them and then bark up the tree they escaped into, but gave that up after never coming close (hard get very big dog moving from a dead stop). After a while he would ignore the squirrels and the squirrels would ignore him – even when they were only 5 feet apart.

Lokal Story of Northern Germany: Jack-Russell-terrier “Killer” (sic!) rescues new-born red squirrel baby (dubbed “Pepe”).

My dog used to regularly catch squirrels, and bring them up on the patio and release them. I don’t know if it was a game to the squirrels or not but it ended when we got another dog that didn’t have as soft a mouth.
