This does seem a little inconsistent. Teena is usually level-headed and pretty unflappable. Being freaked by a dog seems more like a Stick kind of thing.
they should throw Stick and let him fetch her.
I saw a man walking a Newfoundland once and had no idea what kind of creature it was. It looked almost like a small (but not that small) black bear.
